The shortlist for the IBC2018 Innovation Awards has been unveiled. The awards recognise innovation within the media, entertainment and technology industry with a focus on broadcast in three categories: content creation, content distribution and content everywhere.
The three finalists in the content creation category are Chinese broadcaster CCTV for its networked 4K live coverage of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Euronews for its ‘glocal’ news service, and Discovery and Eurosport for the Eurosport Cube, a live virtual reality studio deployed at the Olympic Winter Games.
The content distribution category has four finalists. Econet Media for its TV everywhere platform in Africa; Discovery and Eurosport for working with NEP to develop its Mediabank solution to manage assets and archives for coverage of the Olympic Winter Games; Vodafone for its multi-national, cloud-based television distribution system; and Medialaan in Belgium for giving viewers the ability to watch shows from the beginning with the advertising adjusting itself automatically, ensuring that messages are seen while the viewer catches up with the live transmission.
Finally, the content everywhere nominees are Irish broadcaster RTÉ with its Saorview Connect, a connected, free-to-air television platform, ESPN with Shortstop Live, allowing journalists to broadcast from smartphones with short latency, and WRC (the World Rally Championship) with its All Live platform that gives audiences the same views as the drivers.
‘This year’s finalists are really remarkable,’ said Michael Lumley, chair of the international judging panel. ‘We have live coverage from rally cars, a fantastic new way of immersing audiences in the thrills of winter sports, a highly productive way of creating news stories for multiple languages and cultures, a new initiative to bring OTT and mobile television to sub-Saharan Africa and a whole host more.’ -ProAVLAsia
