The number of active pay direct-to-home (DTH) subscribers has jumped to 65.31 million for the quarter ended 30 June as against 63.61 million in the preceding quarter ended 31 March, as per data provided by private DTH operators to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
The data is only for pay DTH operators and excludes Freedish, the free DTH service of Doordarshan. TRAI has stopped reporting the total DTH universe, which also includes the inactive subscriber base.
In terms of market share, Dish TV’s share of total active DTH subscriber base fell by a percentage point to 24 percent while Sun Direct’s share increased by the same percentage to end quarter at 10 percent.
The share of other four DTH operators, namely Tata Sky (23 percent), Airtel Digital TV (21 percent), Videocon d2h (20 percent) and Reliance Digital TV (2 percent), remained unchanged.
Tata Sky carries maximum number of channels
As far as channel carrying capacity is concerned, Tata Sky reported maximum number of pay + FTA channels at 577 channels. Sun Direct carried the least number of pay + FTA channels at 263. Tata Sky also reported carrying maximum FTA (261) and pay (316) channels.
Siti carries maximum number of channels among MSOs
Among multi-system operators (MSOs), Siti Networks reported maximum pay + FTA + local channels at 420. GTPL Hathway carried least number of pay + FTA + local channels at 200.
GTPL Kolkata carries maximum number of pay channels among MSOs
GTPL Kolkata Cable and Broadband Pariseva carried 239 pay channels, which was the maximum among MSOs.
Fastway Transmission and Hathway Sukhamrit Cable & Datacom each was carrying the maximum number of local channels at 74. – Indian DTH
