In order to get in tune with one of the most powerful mass media that boosts the coverage of more than 90 percent population across the world, the much awaited community radio service of Ranchi University (RU), ‘Radio Kaanchi’ will go on air from January 2018.

Director of ‘Kaanchi’ community radio service, Anand Kumar Thakur said that the State Government has sanctioned `40 lakh for setting up the radio station while `36 lakh will be allotted annually to the community radio for meeting other recurring expenses.

Also, the community radio will sign an MoU with Information and Public Relation Department (IPRD), GoJ in the coming days, while frequency wave allotment (spectrum allocation) process is likely to get complete within two to three days.

“The community radio service after getting clearance from different ministries will be made operational from January 2018. After getting frequency wave clearance, the process of signing MoU with IPRD is going on. Since sanction for frequency allotment took some time, the service of initiating the community radio service got delayed. The guidelines from IPRD have come,” Thakur said.

Notably, revival of this much awaited community radio service was on the cards since long. After getting clearance from Ministry of Information Technology and Ministry of Telecommunications on different fronts, grant for making the community radio service functional will be acquired soon from the Ministry of I&B, assured Thakur.

Notably, the project was supposed to get started in 2011, however, despite various attempts over the years to start the community radio, the ambitious plan never commenced in spite of roping a Kolkata-based firm, Webel Media Electronics that had given the consent to supply and install all acoustically equipped electronic gadgets to the university.

“Considering the guidelines of the Ministry of I & B, all related equipments for setting up the community radio station here at the basic science building of RU will be supplied by the Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), a mini-ratna firm under I&B Ministry. No private companies will be hired separately for the purpose,” Thakur further added.

Besides taking up the issues of students’ welfare, the community radio service will be also utilized for boosting several ambitious schemes of Government of India like skill development, stand-up program and start up schemes.

Targeting not only the students but community as a whole, the community radio service will work on the model of ‘Infotainment’ and ‘Edutainment’ genres covering different social issues.

By far the community radio registers a low presence in this tribal region. At present, in State Capital alone, the community radio service is only functional at Birsa Agriculture University (BAU) and Central University Jharkhand (CUJ).

However, license of Birsa Hariyali Radio Station (BHRS) established on BAU campus premise for benefiting the farmers has expired whereas CUJ radio community radio service too is not operational in full-fledged way. – Daily Pioneer
