Four people arrested for broadcasting pirated content through unlicensed TV station: Egypt’s interior ministry

Egypt’s Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday it arrested four people accused of setting up an unlicensed wireless TV broadcasting station to air pirated and unauthorised content covering the governorates of Cairo, Giza and Qalioubiya with the aim of making financial profits.

The defendants used to broadcast encrypted materials from satellite channels after decoding and re-encoding them to air them on a group of their channels that broadcast pirated films and series, including those that are not authorised by cencership, in exchange for large sums of money collected through electronic wallets, the ministry explained in a statement.

They also established a digital network to broadcast pirated content through the Internet to their clients around the world, and traded in unauthorised equipment locally to break the code of satellite channels.

Their number of subscribers in Egypt and abroad has reached about 210,000, the ministry stated.

The ministry, according to the statement, has raided the network headquarters, its relay stations and shops selling code-breaking devices and tools.

The four defendants are the network owner, network partner, network technical director, and shop manager.

The defendants admitted to committing these violations, the ministry noted. Ahram Online
