Netflix losing ground in Portugal

Netflix recorded a drop of more than 13% in the number of subscribers in Portugal earlier this year, compared to the period between January and April 2022. The data is revealed by Público, based on a study by BStream, by Marktest.

Compared with the last market study period (between November 2022 and February 2023), the drop was 4.6%. It was in February that the streaming platform revealed the end of password sharing and the new price list for anyone who wanted to use the same account in different homes.

The ban on account sharing is therefore being identified as one of the reasons that justify the drop in subscribers.

According to data from Marktest, about a third of Portuguese (33.4%) over 15 years old subscribe to at least one streaming service. However, practically half (49.7%) of respondents said they use one of these services. In 2021, 3.6 million Portuguese watched content via streaming platforms.

In February, Netflix revealed that it would only be possible to share the account if the subscriber opted for one of the most expensive packages: the Standard (11.99 euros per month) or the Premium (15.99 euros). To do so on a regular basis, you will have to “add an extra member” to your Netflix account, which adds 3.99 euros to the monthly fee. The Portugal News
