India’s internet subscriber base surpasses 895 million
India’s internet subscriber base continued to expand in the second quarter of 2023, reaching 895.83 million, up from 881.25 million in the previous quarter. This growth was primarily driven by the increasing popularity of broadband internet services, which now account for 861.47 million of the total subscriber bases.
The number of wireless internet subscribers also witnessed an increase, reaching 860.29 million, while wireline subscribers rose to 35.54 million. The overall tele-density in India increased from 83.87% to 84.43% during the quarter.
The Broadband internet subscriber base grew by 1.76% to 861.47 million, while as wireline subscriber base increased by 6.70% to 30.31 million.
The average monthly revenue per user (ARPU) for wireless services increased by 2.33% to Rs.145.64 and the overall MOU per subscriber per month increased by 1.45% to 960.
Meanwhile, prepaid ARPU (average revenue per user) increased from Rs.139.63 in QE Mar-23 to Rs.143.81 in QE Jun-23, while postpaid ARPU decreased from Rs.173.50 in QE Mar-23 to Rs.166.22 in QE Jun-23.
Overall MOU (minutes of usage) per subscriber per month increased by 1.45%, from 946 in Q.E. Mar-2023 to 960 in Q.E. Jun-2023. Prepaid MOU per subscriber per month increased from 983 in QE Mar-23 to 1000 in QE Jun-23, while postpaid MOU per subscriber per month decreased from 518 in QE Mar-23 to 509 in QE Jun-23.
