Disney, FOX, and Warner Bros. Discovery forge alliance for sports streaming service
This week Disney, FOX, and Warner Bros. Discovery announced a partnership that would see a new sports-focused TV streaming service launch this fall. This service would offer 14 live channels of sports, including ESPN, BTN, FOX Sports, and sports from TNT—to name a few. This would address one of the main complaints of streaming services: the need to switch between apps to see all the games.
Cable TV may be the biggest loser with this service, but Frndly TV and Philo may be the biggest winners. Most of the top 100 most-watched shows in 2024 were sports events, but there is still demand for non-sports programs from some people.
Services like Frndly TV and Philo could benefit from households that mostly want sports but are looking for a few other cannels like HGTV and the Hallmark Channel.
Skinny streaming services starting at just $6.99 a month and going to $25 a month could help cord cutters get the non-sports channels they may want along with sports from this new streaming service from Disney, FOX, and Warner Bros. Discovery.
The bigger question is how will this impact cablelike streaming services including YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV.
If this new streaming service comes in at a $30 to $40 price point, it could make bundling streaming services cheaper than going with a traditional live TV streaming service like YouTube TV. For now, we will have to wait and see what is announced about pricing and limitations later this year ahead of the fall 2024 launch date. Cord Cutters News
