Asia Pacific to add 93 million SVOD subscriptions by 2029, Led by China
The Asia Pacific region will tally 687 million SVOD subscriptions by 2029, up from 594 million in 2023, according to new data from Digital TV Research. The London-based firm reports China will generate 378 million subscriptions in 2029.
From the 93 million SVOD sub additions through 2029, India will increase by 22 million, China 17 million, Japan 14 million, South Korea 9 million and Indonesia 8 million.
With China blocking access to Netflix, Prime Video and other U.S.-based SVOD platform within its borders, and the Indian market focused on low-cost mobile subscribers, the Asian-Pacific market is declining for U.S. streamers.
Netflix and Prime Video will dominate among U.S. streamers with 61.9 million and 55.8 million subscribers, respectively.
“Five major U.S.-based platforms will only control a quarter of Asia Pacific’s SVOD subscriptions by 2029 – lower than any other region in the world,” analyst Simon Murray said in a statement. “These platforms will never gain standalone access to China, the region’s largest market.” Media Play News
