Vodafone presides over largest fibre-optic network in Germany
Vodafone is connecting the largest combined fiber optic network in Germany, and thus the broadest fiber optic offering on the German market. In the future, Vodafone will be able to offer fiber optic to more than 11 million households and companies. The company is relying on its own expansion and, more than other providers, on sharing existing infrastructure. To this end, Vodafone has launched partnerships with Telekom, Deutsche Glasfaser, and other providers.
Around 9.5 million potential customers are now being activated on Vodafone’s fiber optic network solution with Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Glasfaser. In addition, there are own expansion projects for more than half a million households and companies as well as regions for a further 1.3 million households in which OXG Glasfaser GmbH has already started the expansion. OXG was launched by Vodafone and Altice in 2023 for up to seven million new fiber optic connections. In the future, Vodafone’s fiber optic offer is to continue to grow through further partnerships.
The basis for the largest fiber optic offer on the market was established with corresponding contracts with Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Glasfaser. Since then, Vodafone technicians and IT experts have programmed the interfaces required for data exchange and combined and tested booking and activation processes. Vodafone can offer fiber optic offers to more private and business customers than other competitors in the market.
Vodafone is working with districts, municipalities, cities, and communities on its own fiber optic expansion. The communications group is currently managing around 50 projects – both self-financed and subsidized – with a marketing volume of over half a million FTTH connections.
Marcel de Groot, CEO, Vodafone Germany
“In 2019, we launched Germany’s largest gigabit network and thus got the fiber optic expansion in this country underway. Today we are taking the next step and connecting the largest unified fiber optic network for our customers. We are digging ourselves and with our expansion partners from OXG. And we are sharing infrastructure to increase competition and the range of services for people – even without superstructure.”
Marc Albers, Acting Managing Director, Private Customers, Vodafone Germany
“Network quality and marketing reach are the decisive factors for future customer growth. In the fixed network business, we are now bundling the FTTH marketing potential of our cooperation partners Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Glasfaser with our own expansion measures for the first time. This strengthens competition and strengthens our position in the broadband market. And at the same time, it brings the necessary digitalization boost for people, companies, and for the whole of Germany.” The Fast Mode
