Digitalization project to transform television broadcasting begins today in Sri Lanka

The project to digitalize Sri Lankan television broadcasting will be launched in Colombo today with the participation of Minister of Mass Media and Information Dullas Alahapperuma as the Chief Guest.

The Sri Lanka Television Broadcasting Digitization Project will be launched at 7 p.m. today at the Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo, the Mass Media Ministry said.

According to the Ministry, there is an urgent need to launch the Digital Broadcasting Project, a major revolution in the transformation of the current analog television broadcasting system in Sri Lanka with outdated technology into most advanced technology.

The new project will be launched under a special financial assistance provided by the Government of Japan to Sri Lanka, which will bring immense privileges and benefits to Sri Lankan TV broadcasters, viewers and the general public as a whole, the Ministry said.

Currently, each channel has to use individual frequency bands under the local broadcasting system. However, with the new digitization program, the capacity of the Frequency Spectrum in Sri Lanka will increase exponentially, increasing the capacity to a single frequency by eight times or even 800 percent. Due to this, in addition to the existing active television channels in the country, 200 more TV channels will be allowed to broadcast a number of new programs. ColomboPage
