JTBC Studios buys three content production companies
Cable channel JTBC’s content management affiliate JTBC Studios acquired three local content production companies.
According to JTBC Studios on Thursday, it acquired Climax Studio, Production H and Contents Zium on Wednesday, which the company described as “production companies that are presenting high-quality content across diverse platforms including TV channels and OTT [over-the-top online video] services.”
Climax Studio was founded in 2018 as Lezhin Studio and produced the drama series “The Cursed” (2020) and film “The Jazzy Misfits” (2019). It split from Lezhin Entertainment and changed its name to Climax Studio and is preparing to release highly anticipated projects such as “D.P.,” a Netflix series based on auteur Yeon Sang-ho’s webtoon series “The Hell.”
Production H was founded in 2016 by Hwang Chang-woo, who produced drama series with companies such as Keyeast and Contents K. It produced the popular Netflix series “Love Alarm 2” (2021) and KBS drama series “Oh! La Villa Samgwang” (2020).
Contents Zium received acclaim for its 2020 JTBC drama series “Itaewon Class,” which was based on the Daum Webtoon series of the same title. JTBC Studios had already invested in Contents Zium in 2019.
The acquisition of the three companies will give JTBC Studios a competitive edge in the content market in both quantity and quality, the company said.
“As Korea’s jump into the global OTT market gains momentum, content competition is getting fiercer,” said Kim Si-kyoo, President of JTBC Studios. “A company with the system that allows a steady supply and distribution of quality content will take the lead in the media market. JTBC Studios hopes to take the lead with its excellent production companies.” KoreaJoongAngDaily
