Korean Research Institute ETRI to showcase D2M Broadcasting Technologies In India
The buzz around Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) broadcasting has been growing, with two major technologies—ATSC 3.0 and 5G Broadcast—vying for prominence. Both have presented strong cases for their superiority. The Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI), a renowned Korean government-funded institution leading in information technology, communications, and electronics innovation, has conducted extensive lab and field tests on both technologies under various challenging conditions.
ETRI will demonstrate these tests in workshops at Jamia Millia Islamia on June 5, 2024, and at the India International Centre on June 6 and 7, 2024. These workshopsare being jointly hosted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and AJK Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC), Jamia Millia Islamia.
The workshop and demonstration of lab tests for these two emerging technologies will attract a distinguished audience, including top private broadcasters, telecom companies, BARC, C-DOT, COAI, mobile device manufacturers, and senior government officials from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, the Department of Telecommunications, Prasar Bharati, TRAI, BSNL, MeitY, and WPC. Additionally, there will be significant participation from academia, with attendees from IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, and IIT Bombay.
The workshop will focus on comparing the physical layer performance of ATSC 3.0 and 5G Broadcast (technical term – FeMBMS) for D2M broadcasting under various static and dynamic conditions. Utilizing actual hardware developed by ETRI, the demonstrations will be led by Dr. Sung-Ik Park, Fellow IEEE, along with other ETRI experts. They will showcase and explain the results, which have been validated through extensive simulations, lab tests, and field tests conducted by ETRI in Korea in 2022 and 2023. Attendees can expect a compelling visual presentation of user experience and technical performance.
For technical people, this is an excellent opportunity to have deep dive discussions with the ETRI experts, and interactively turn the dials. For the non-technical audience, the visual effects on video watching under various real-life conditions will help in understanding comparative merits. India
