Ligue 1 TV rights up for grabs after bidding process fails
As reported by L’Équipe, the LFP’s (Ligue de Football Professionel) French football TV rights bidding process for the 2024-29 cycle has resulted in no offers being made by broadcasters. The LFP must now proactively negotiate with interested parties.
After the submission of qualitative offers on Monday, the LFP launched its bidding process on Tuesday. Five bundles were on offer, including the two main bundles for the rights to broadcast games live. However, there were no takers at the current price. One bundle, worth €530m, includes the two biggest matches of the gameweek plus the fourth-choice fixture, which would be co-broadcast. The other bundle, worth €270m, is for the rest of the matches that aren’t broadcast by the other broadcaster.
The LFP will now have to reach out an negotiate directly with the interested broadcasters. Those that didn’t make a qualitative offer on Monday, such as Canal+, one of the current broadcasters of Ligue 1, will also be negotiated with.
In an official press release, the LFP said, “After having received multiple qualitative offers and guaranteed financial packages on all of the bundles (1-5), LFP Media reveals that none of the bundles have been attributed today (Tuesday) […] as a result, LFP Media is continuing its commercialisation process of the rights to Ligue 1 and postpones the call for candidates for Ligue 2.” GetFootballNewsFrance
