Movistar Shuts Down Specialized eSports Channel

Experts and analysts alike coincide in that eSports is a segment that won’t stop growing, with million dollar numbers and astronomical projections.

However, all that glitters is not gold, and for eSports, nothing rings truer than Movistar+ decision to pull the plug on Movistar eSports, the specialized network that focused on electronic sports and was launched on February of 2017.

The decision comes less than two years since its release, which was announced with the objective of rebroadcasting competitions like the Intel Extreme Masters, ESL One, ESL Masters and MotoGP eSports Championship tournaments.

With this decision, U-Beat, the OTT platform specializing on eSports launched by Mediapro Group, is the only eSports referent in Spain.

However, Movistar won’t back down from the segment, as they explained on a press release.

“Movistar+ will continue to be the home of eSports. The big events and the most relevant content related to eSports, will be available on the 24-hour sports channels in the he platform, in the multi-event channels, in Vamos and on-demand,” details the release.― TTV News
