NGP formulated-Now can access foreign orbital resources with authorisations

Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has released the Norms, Guidelines, and Procedures (NGP) for implementation of the Indian Space Policy 2023. The policy was formulated with a larger vision to open the space sector up to increased participation of private companies.

Satellite players in India have so far not been allowed to use non-Indian orbital resources and had to rely purely on Indian orbital resources that were often limited and more expensive. The new policy will bring in competition among the satcom players, OneWeb, Amazon, Hughes and Jio Satellite Communications. It will also would greater flexibility to them.

The new guidelines stipulate that Indian satellite companies need to apply to ITU, Genava for using non-Indian orbital resources to provide satcom services in India. But local companies need an authorisation from IN-SPACe that use of such foreign orbital resources for beaming satellite internet services in India won’t cause any harmful interference with other satellite networks. Satellite players in India have so far not been allowed to use non-Indian orbital resources and had to rely purely on Indian orbital resources that were often limited and more expensive.

No doubt, the new policy will bring in competition among the satcom players, OneWeb, Amazon, Hughes and Jio Satellite Communications. It will also would greater flexibility to them.
