Vodafone to convert Horizon into GigaTV boxes

At Vodafone there is more than just that Amazon Prime Video via Giga TV as well as one soon to be launched TV-Tarif inklusive Netflix, one continues to pursue the standardization of its services. There are still remnants that are reminiscent of Unitymedia.

From spring 2022, TV customers in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Baden-Württemberg will receive a software update for their Horizon recorder (standard set-top box at Unitymedia) that GigaTV plays. The rollout should be completed by autumn 2022. Since September, the “GigaTV Cable Box 2” has also been the standard device for TV reception in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Baden-Württemberg. So far, however, only new customers have received the set-top box and thus access to the GigaTV world from Vodafone. Regardless of this, there is still more information. The SVOD offer GEO WILD from RTL is available for the first time in Germany and is now available on GigaTV devices.

And: The ARD radio programs in the cable network will in future be broadcast in AAC audio format – ARD changed satellite transponders and audio formats. As part of the innovations, the existing satellite radio service will be terminated on December 14, 2021. Since Vodafone uses the satellite signal of the ARD radio programs as a source for feeding the radio stations in the cable network, the ARD radio programs in the Vodafone cable fiber optic network will also be broadcast via AAC-LC from November 16, 2021 December.

Cable receivers such as the GigaTV or Horizon set-top boxes support the new audio standard. Vodafone will provide a software update for Bemondis receivers that customers have received from Vodafone in the coming weeks.
